Nate Brown Brings Back How Sweet the Sound with New HBCU Category

Nate Brown, owner and executive producer of How Sweet the Sound, recently joined Erica Campbell on Get Up Mornings to talk about the return of the beloved gospel music competition. Known as the “American Idol of gospel,” the show brings together the best of the best in gospel choirs, soloists, spoken word artists, and dance ensembles.

During the conversation, Brown shared his excitement about a new category added for 2025: HBCU choirs, presented by Mielle Organics. “We know that HBCUs have contributed so much to the culture and our nation,” Brown said. “This is a great time to highlight their incredible gospel choirs.”
The event continues to spotlight talent from across the country, giving performers the chance to sing in front of some of gospel’s biggest names. This year’s host will be the legendary Donald Lawrence. Judges include Jonathan McReynolds, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Ricky Dillard, JJ Hairston, and Jekalyn Carr—all of whom will also perform.
When asked how to attend, Brown encouraged fans to grab tickets at Ticketmaster.com for the upcoming show at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, May 24.
Erica Campbell and Griff both expressed their appreciation for Brown’s commitment to promoting gospel music. Campbell shared a personal connection—her mother’s choir once competed in the event.
