Recently residents of Compton, California have been complaining about rust-colored tap water that they don’t feel comfortable drinking, or using to bathe or shower. Check out the picture below of the alleged discoloration.

According to ABC 7, state officials said there are no signs of bacteria in the water, and that it won’t threaten resident’s health. Sativa Water District, a Los Angeles company, provides water to 1,600 people, 30 of which are actually Compton residents. The company gave customers rust and iron stain remover to help with the issue.
“All it does is just clear the rust, but it’s still in there, and there’s more chemicals in there,” a resident,” Genoveva Camargo, told the news station.
In response to all of these experiences, Compton Mayor Aja Brown, who recently announced her run for Congress but ended up dropping out of the race because she’s expecting a child, released an exclusive statement to The Shade Room saying that she gave residents the option to join the county’s system, but they chose Sativa instead because they offer their customers a cheaper rate. Here is a snippet of the statement:
“Sativa Water District is not governed or operated by the City of Compton. Sativa is operated by the County of Los Angeles, which is governed by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Recently, Sativa’s Water District has experienced brown water issues. Sativa services 1,600 customers, of which 30 live in Compton. Compton has 100,000 residents, our own water system, and water supply, which we have spent $100 Million to improve and are still improving through a water bond paid for by our taxpayers.
In the past, the city gave residents the option to join our system and they declined because Sativa offers their customers flat rate service, regardless of how much water they actually use. Recently, after being notified by residents, we instructed city staff to proceed forward with absorbing the 30 residents into our system – if they choose.”
