When Mary J. Blige isn’t giving us a heartfelt breakup ballad, or adding a new word to the English language (see: dancerey), she is perfecting her acting chops.

In her latest acting endeavor, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul will star in Mudbound, a period piece directed by Dee Rees that takes place in the Jime Crow era of  the Mississippi Delta. According to reports, Blige plays “Florence Jackson, a mother of four who navigates her family through the dangers of being Black while living on a flood-drenched farm in the south.”

Apparently Mary J. Blige felt the pressure to perform all while dealing with the drama of a messy divorce:

“If I didn’t let go and give into the character, the movie probably wouldn’t be what it is right now. It was the one thing that needed to be done, and I couldn’t let Dee down she tells Essence.

While we wait for Mary to break a leg in Mudbound on its release in mid November…have you seen this Essence cover? The songstress is aging backwards on the forefront of the upcoming November issue: (press play below)
