News of Day’s casting was first announced in 2018 with Lakeith Stanfield set to play opposite the Grammy-nominated singer. Reports say the film “will tell the story of Holiday (Day)’s career, particularly the portion of her life when she became the target of the Federal Department of Narcotics. The leader of the sting operation against Holiday was her lover, Black federal agent Jimmy Fletcher (Rhodes).”

Holiday’s iconic career is no stranger to audiences as she’s been depicted both by Diana Ross in 1972 biopic Lady Sings The Blues and seven-time Tony winner Audra McDonald on Broadway in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Dolemite) Evan Ross (The Hunger Games) and Miss Lawrence (Star) will also star in the upcoming film.
