This week Missy Elliott became the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame at the prestigious group’s 50th-anniversary celebration and award ceremony. While we’ve known and previously reported that the hip-hop queen would be celebrated that evening, what took place during the night’s events came as a surprise to the audience as well as the honoree.

A touching tribute from former First Lady Michelle Obama was played on the stage as Queen Latifah presented the award.

Mrs. Obama spoke to the emcee’s courageous and inspiring career stating, “Missy’s example shows us that your voice is more than the words we say, it’s about where those words come from.”

The 47-year-old accepted her award with big small and a few happy tears as she thanked fans and everyone who supported and believed in her along the way.
