In a new CNN investigation, at least 13 friends of the late James Brown, are asking for an autopsy (his daughter Yamma denied the request for one after his death) and/or a criminal investigation to answer a few much-needed questions — including Marvin Crawford, the Doctor that signed the Godfather of Soul’s death certificate in 2006.

“He changed too fast. He was a patient I would never have predicted would have coded. … But he died that night, and I did raise that question: What went wrong in that room?” Brown’s official cause of death was said to be fluid in the lungs in addition to a heart attack, but his manager, widow and son are calling on forensics to help decipher what really went down.

According to CNN, “Based on interviews with nearly 140 people, the three-part series also examines the 1996 death of Adrienne Brown, James Brown’s third wife. Although authorities in California found no sign of foul play when Adrienne Brown died while recovering from plastic surgery, a friend always believed she was murdered. In 2017, the retired police detective who investigated Adrienne Brown’s death showed CNN the pages of a notebook that he said a confidential informant had given him in 2001. In those pages, which the detective says he read for the first time after CNN contacted him in 2017, the informant alleges that a doctor confessed to murdering Adrienne Brown with a fatal drug overdose. CNN found and interviewed the doctor, who denied the allegations. The police did not open a criminal investigation when James Brown died in 2006. But his friend Andre White and others have alleged that Brown was murdered.”

There’s also issue on rather Brown’s body was actually in the crypt. When CNN asked Deanna, another one of James’ daughters, she declined to answer.

The Brown estate and family have continued to fight for their father’s legacy on all fronts. In 2012, Daryl Brown plead with the Attorney General to protect his father’s charity, while Deanna, revealed in 2013 she was working with Mick Jagger on a biopic. As the years passed on, the family would go on to lose their sister, Vernisha Brown to pneumonia. In 2017 TV one celebrated the life of James on an episode of Unsung. Watch below.
