Shout out to Harris County, Texas! The most populated county in the state, which includes Houston, just made history by swearing in 17 black female judges at the same time. This cohort calls themselves the “Harris Black Girl Magic,” and rightfully so.
In a tweet by the Harris County Democrats on Tuesday, they recognized this important moment: “Today we usher in a new era of representative government and progressive leadership in Harris County.”
These women drew in a packed house to witness their swearing in.
Now, the newly under oath Harris Black Girl Magic cohort is letting everyone know what they stand for and how they plan to be judges for all people. Angela Graves-Harrington told KHOU 11 that she wants to give people an opportunity to see judges who fairly represent the diversity in the county. And for Latosha Lewis Payne, (who was the mastermind behind the now-viral photo) said, “I for one am looking into making sure that every person who has a legal case, has an equal opportunity for justice.”
2019 seems like it’s shaping up to be a great year with black women doing what they do best…winning! But we can’t forget about all the great moments in 2018 either, like Stacey Abrams being elected as Georgia’s Democratic nominee for Governor or Ayanna Pressley becoming the first black House member of Massachusetts.
