Ava DuVernay is manifesting the best year of her life! DuVernay will direct another $100-million-plus budget film, the Warner Brothers & DC Comics film The New God.
We’re literally watching history be made as DuVernay takes on not one, but two big budget, larger-than-life films in the short span of two years. A Wrinkle In Time (a $100-million budget film), which debuted March 9, is currently number 2 at the box office behind another Black-directed film Black Panther ✊??? (a $200-million budget film).
The University of Southern California’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative report helped us understand exactly how special 2018 really is. No Black Director has made a film with a budget larger than $250 million and only 7 Black directors – and 1 Black woman – have created films with budgets between $250-$100 million.
As the headlines highlight, DuVernay has taken over the industry from Selma to Queen Sugar to A Wrinkle In Time and now the superhero-sized The New God. And, she has a special connection to this movie, her favortie superhero is Big Barda, one of the new gods.
Gosh, that’s hard. Big Barda. Many reasons. #askava https://t.co/3qxGDq7mHe
