Anok Yai has made history by becoming the first Black model in over 20 years to open the Prada Runway Show! The 19-year old model follows in the footsteps of none other than supermodel Naomi Campbell, who was the first to achieve this.

Yai’s modeling career started when a picture she posted went viral on social media. Back in October of 2017, Yai was a normal college student at Plymouth State University studying biochemistry, who decided to visit Howard University’s Homecoming to see what all the hype was about. While there, she posed for a flick on the yard, and everything changed!

The picture began circulating on social media after a photographer called, “The Sunk,” posted the photo to his page.

“Before all this happened, I had around 150 followers and was getting about 20 to 30 likes on each photo, and then suddenly, these numbers skyrocketed in a matter of hours,” Yai told yahoo in an interview.

Would you look at her now?! The Sundanese student’s life has changed, and her modeling career is off to an amazing start. Just four months after her photo went viral, she’s been slaying runways around the world.

“It was an honour and I’m proud that I was the one chosen to open, but this is bigger than me,” Yai told Vogue. “Me opening for one of the top fashion houses is a statement to the world – especially for black women – that their beauty is something that deserves to be celebrated.”

We are celebrating with you, sis! We’re SO inspired by this display of #BlackGirlMagic.
