Usually magazines rarely get it right, especially when it comes to OUR folks. But we have to give the staff at Elle Magazine all their propers for including Cicely Tyson in their annual Women in Hollywood series. Not only does the living legend appear in the campaign, she landed a solo cover!

Sporting a curly fro and styled in Calvin Klein jeans, the iconic actress talks about the women who have influenced her career (see caption above), while 34-year-old Tessa Thompson (Creed, Selma, Dear White People) reveals why she never went after traditional roles.

“I think our ideas about what a young black person or a young Mexican person or a young white person should be like weren’t as expansive then as they are now. It made me think I had to fit into a box. The one-dimensional girlfriend or the sassy black friend—those weren’t going to work for me.”

Elle‘s Women in Hollywood issue hits newsstands October 17.
