It’s a sad day for classic R&B.

Joni Sledge, one of the founding members of Sister Sledge, was found dead in her Arizona apartment this Friday.

A statement from the family reads: “On yesterday, numbness fell upon our family. We welcome your prayers as we weep the loss of our sister, mother, aunt, niece and cousin.”

Not like anyone needs reminding but Joni and her three sisters Debbie, Kim and Kathy were a family group from Philadelphia who formed in 1971 but bust onto the national scene with their 1979 hit “We Are Family” — a family reunion staple produced by Unsung alum Nile Rodgers.

Our heart breaks for the Sledge family and we’ll keep them in our thoughts.

Watch Rodgers explain his part in the Sister Sledge iconic hit.
