On the heels of Tracee Ellis Ross‘ Golden Globe win this week, Black-ish has stirred up conversations for its “Lemons” episode which focuses on Donald Trump winning the U.S. presidential election.
This epic episode joins the Johnsons eight weeks after the election results. It follows how characters, mostly Hillary Clinton supporters, deal with the reality that “The Donald” will be the 45th President of the United States.
Dre (Anthony Anderson) returns to work and notices his co-workers remain shell-shocked and unproductive. And it’s his impassioned ‘wake-up call’ speech that really exposes how we need to push through despite our differences.

This episode didn’t shy away from understanding why people voted for Trump. Fending off accusations of racism, Lucy (Catherine Reitman) said, “I voted for Obama twice. He felt different. But it’s eight years later. My dad’s still out of work. My hometown’s about to go under. And Hillary comes out saying she’s basically going to keep everything the same. I’m sorry, but that doesn’t work for me.”
Fans praised the show’s creator Kenya Barris for a great episode and he responded back with this Instagram post.
In previous seasons, Black-ish has tackled relevant issues such as policy brutality and interracial dating. And this season is already staying true to its ground-breaking role in pop culture with another NAACP Image Award nomination this year.
