The last time Barack Obama had to make a big speech about race, it was 2008 and he was doing his best to both embrace and distance himself from his former pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright, who stirred things up with a sermon that condemned America for it’s racist past.
Thursday night, however, Obama will be speaking as a President looking toward the future of race relations in a world where Black Lives Matters have been vilified, cops have been targeted and innocent, unarmed black people are being killed by police on camera.
The town hall will air across Disney networks (ABC, ESPN, Freeform, Yahoo, etc.) and will be moderated by ABC “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir and ESPN commentator/host Jemele Hill.
In the last several days, Obama has commented on the unrest sparked by the shootings, most recently this week at the memorial service for the cops killed in last week’s shooting where he said “I’m here to say we must reject such despair. I’m here to insist that we are not as divided as we seem. And I know that because I know America. I know how far we’ve come against impossible odds.”
“I believe our sorrow can make us a better country.”
