His name was Micah Xavier Johnson.
He was 25 and he had some military training.
And as far as we can tell, he was one of the suspects who initiated a deadly sniper attack killing five Dallas cops, injuring many more plus civilians.
And yes, he was Black. Something we’ve all been holding our breath over and hoping would NOT be true. And yet . . .
According to CNN, while engaged in a stand-off that ended in his death, Johnson told the police negotiators that he “wanted to kill officers, and he expressed killing white people, he expressed killing white officers, he expressed anger for Black Lives Matter.”
Over the last two years, the Black Lives Matter movement has been instrumental in lifting up the names of Black men and women who have been killed in questionable confrontations with the police. They have also been criticized as dangerous and unfocused. And now that a crazy man with a gun (and possibly the three other suspects involved in the attack) have invoked the BLM movement, the group is likely to come under more scrutiny.
But does it have to?
On Thursday’s episode of “The Daily Show,” host Trevor Noah opened by saying “You can be pro-black and pro-cop.”
