When “Empire” first hit last year, it was seen as the dawn of the big, Black drama. With a strong cast and a huge budget, the show dominated our social feeds and took over our Wednesdays nights. And while it definitely felt new to see US in a weekly drama, there was something . . . familiar about “Empire” that we just couldn’t put our finger on. And then it hit us — “Empire” is every soap opera you grew up watching while sitting on the floor with your mama doing your hair.
