We have lost a legend. Thank you for being one of the best to ever do it #PhifeDawg. #RIP A Tribe Called Quest

After last night, hip hop can never be the same. Malik Isaac Taylor, better known as Phife Dawg, was one-third (or one-fourth) of the pioneering rap group A Tribe Called Quest, died Thursday night of undetermined causes.

Having long fought diabetes, and even his partner-in-rhyme Q-Tip in some public spats, Phife was an indispensable part of the group, which most recently made a triumphant appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show.

Known for stealing the show on cuts like “Butter,” “Vibes and Stuff” and “Electric Relaxation,” Phife always brought versatile, sports-laced lyrics that had you rewinding the tape (yes, the tape) to make sure you caught it all. He will be missed.
