Michelle Obama will star and executive produce Waffles + Mochi, a new children’s cooking series on Netflix premiering March 16.
The show follows the former first lady’s “two new friends” who dream of becoming chefs and travel across the world and discover new recipes with the help from renowned chefs, home cooks, kids, and celebrities.
The author shared the news on Instagram to her 45.2 million followers writing, “This is something I’ve been working on for a while now, and I’m so excited to finally be able to tell you all about it. Allow me to introduce two new friends of mine: Their names are Waffles and Mochi.”
“It’s all about good food: discovering it, cooking it, and of course, eating it,” she continued. “These two will take us on adventures all around the world to explore new ingredients and try out new recipes. Kids will love it, but I know that adults will also get plenty of laughs—and some tips for the kitchen.”
Hoping to bring “a bit of light and laughter to homes around the world,” she will serve as the supermarket owner as Waffles and Mochi travel to kitchens, restaurants, farms, and homes across the country on global ingredient missions.
Obama further explained that this show serves as an extension of her work as a First Lady to support children’s health. In 2010, then-President Barack Obama signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act which funded child nutrition programs and free lunch programs in schools. It was a part of the 57-year-old’s Let’s Move! initiative to encourage a healthy lifestyle in children and combat childhood obesity.
The series is the latest release from their partnership with Netflix and her and Mr. Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions. Waffles + Mochi is collaborating with the Partnership for a Healthier America where they work to expand access to affordable and healthy food for communities in need.
