Pure dyn-o-mite is returning to our TV screens…but with a twist!

Netflix orders an animated 10-episode take on Norman Lear‘s classic 1970s sitcom, Good Times. Carl Jones, known for The Boondocks and The Last O.G., will serve as the creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Accompanying Jones on the project are executive producers Lear, Stephen Curry, and Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane.

The theme of tackling today’s social issues comes as no surprise to long-time viewers as the show was known for facing heavy themes that affected thousands of Americans in the 70s: unemployment, gang violence, alcohol and drug addiction, and much more. As the Black Lives Matter movement floods the streets in support of Black victims of racial injustice and police brutality, the pandemic plaguing the United States, and the overall mess that has been 2020, it’ll be interesting to see how they’ll apply their comedic twist to these events.

Jones expressed his excitement to be on the project stating that “It’s a dream come true to be working with the legendary talents of Norman Lear, Seth MacFarlane, and Stephen Curry.” He further went on to say that they’re “excited to carry on the original legacy of Good Times – but now animated and a little edgier. Let’s just say the struggle has just gotten strugglier.”
