Oprah‘s mother Vernita Lee died on Thanksgiving according to a statement provided to PEOPLE magazine from the family. She was 83. The details are scarce and reportedly Lee has already been laid to rest during a private funeral. Oprah took to Instagram to confirm the news and thank the public for their support.

It’s no secret Oprah and Vernita had a strained relationship very early on. Lady O was raised early on by her maternal grandmother and moved to Milwaukee to live with her mom at the age of six. Remember this moment during the early years of the Oprah Winfrey Show where she gave her mother a makeover?

And then there was this moment in 2013 where she talked about the lessons she learned from her mother.

Born on May 2, 1935, she reportedly “worked as a housekeeper throughout her life, Lee is survived by Winfrey and daughter Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, who she gave up for adoption at birth and reconnected with later in life. Lee also had two other children — son Jeffrey Lee, who died in 1989 and daughter Patricia Lee Lloyd, who died in 2003.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.
