In episode three of her new Red Table Talk series with her mother Adrienne Banfield Norris and daughter Willow Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith opens up about why we usually see her sporting a turban nowadays, especially since all we’ve known her to have is a head full of thick, natural hair.

“I’ve been having issues with hair loss. It was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day with just handfuls of hair in my hand…I was literally shaking with fear. That’s why I cut my hair. My hair has been a big part of me…I had a lot of hair…to the point where people always thought I had weaves. Taking care of my hair has been a beautiful ritual…having the choice to have hair or not. “

This week the trio discussed body image and the 46-year-old explained how she had to look at the hair loss from a spiritual aspect. “The higher power takes so much from people…cancer, losing kids. If the higher power wants to take my hair..that’s it? God you want my hair? What else would you put on the table for God to take? Take the hair.”

We’ve seen black women slowly become liberated more and more when it comes to their hair. Our right to choose between kinky curls or silky tresses is part of what makes us beautifully layered.
