Atlanta’s former mayor, Andrew Young was admitted to the hospital after falling ill after delivering the commencement speech at Fisk University over the weekend. According to WSB-TV, the 86-year-old civil rights legend spent three days at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Young is said to be headed home to Atlanta where he’ll immediately be admitted to Emory University under the care of his personal physician.

Young was a close friend of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. He began his career as a pastor and would eventually become executive director of the esteemed Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He continues to be a fixture in the fight for equality, regularly speaking at conferences and hosting events.
