On October 7, 1997 a 31-year-old Janet Jackson released her sixth album that would go on to be number one on both the R&B and Billboard 200.

The Velvet Rope introduced the world to a new Janet. She flirted with sexuality and erotica. The album spawned several hits including Got ‘Till It’s Gone featuring Q-Tip and Joni Mitchell.

And we can’t forget the super sexy I Get So Lonely. Both the original and the remix will always be a favorite. Watch below.

The iconic album continues to live on and has been covered by the masses. Watch North Carolina A&T University’s band pay tribute in 2014.
