Back in 2015, Taye Diggs found himself under major fire for referring to his son as ‘biracial’ or ‘mixed’ and not black. For full context, Diggs is the author of two children’s books, Chocolate Me and Mixed Me and he was attempting to explain the meaning behind each book.

He told The Grio, “When you [call biracial kids Black], you risk disrespecting that one half of who you are and that’s my fear,” he explained. “I don’t want my son to be in a situation where he calls himself Black and everyone thinks he has a Black mom and a Black dad, and then they see a White mother, they wonder, ‘Oh, what’s going on?”

While on the promotional trail for his new film Till Death Do Us Part, Diggs believes his controversial comments were “misunderstood.”

“That happens. But that gives me an opportunity to talk about issues that we don’t really talk about.”

Diggs shares a son with actress Idena Menzel. The two divorced in 2014.
