It’s been long since considered the Oscars of fashion and this year the stars did not disappoint. While the evening is mostly about what the stars are wearing, it was no surprise that many of the night’s honorees took a political stance while accepting their awards.

Janelle Monáe easily delivered one of the evening’s most powerful speeches. Being honored for her contributions to February’s Women’s March alongside Gloria Steinem and Cecile Richards, she used her platform to solicit a call to action.

“As human beings, it is going to be our responsibility to take care of one another,” she stated. “Women’s rights are human rights. LGBTQ rights are human rights… So as human beings let’s never forget that none of us are free until all of us are free.”
