Apple has named Dr. Denise Young Smith vice president of Diversity and Inclusion. Smith previously served as head of worldwide human resources for three years and has been instrumental in orchestrating its $40-million, multi-year commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), the largest and most comprehensive corporate investment ever given exclusively for students and faculty of four-year HBCUs.
Additionally, in her new role, she will have more of an impact on Apple’s diversity and inclusion initiatives.
TechCruch reports that worldwide, Apple is 68 percent male and 32 percent female (In 2015, Apple was 69 percent male and 31 percent female), according to its latest diversity report. In the U.S. the company is 56 percent white, 19 percent Asian, 12 percent Hispanic and only 9 percent black.
Since joining the company in 1997, Dr. Young Smith served in several key human resources roles. She earned a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1978 from Grambling State University and later a master’s degree in organizational management.

She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the nations oldest black Greek-letter organization for college women.
