It’s commencement season and graduates far and wide prepare for the big moment where they cross the stage and step into the real world. At Howard University, both the students and the institution are celebrating. This weekend marks Howard’s celebration of 150 years of truth and excellence as it welcomes the first graduating class from the newly named Cathy Hughes School of Communications.

On Friday, May 12, Urban One CEO Alfred C. Liggins, III paid homage to our founder, and his mother, Cathy Hughes and delivered the commencement address for the School of Communications.

Liggins encouraged the graduating class to tell our stories, he said:

“All things by us and about us, should be important to us and matter to us….we should never depend on the culture that enslaved us to accurately portray us.”
