Chances are if you were old enough to appreciate hip-hop music in 1992 (or snuck behind your parents’ back like many of us), then you know how monumental Dr. Dre‘s debut album, The Chronic, was. Can you believe it has been 25 years since the album was released?
With Straight Outta Compton still in our recent memories, it’s nice to pinpoint exactly where Dr. Dre was in his career when this record dropped: He just parted from one of the biggest rap groups of all time N.W.A, and started his record label Death Row Records with the infamous, Suge Knight.
With major hits like “Nuthin’ But A G Thang,” “Dre Day,” and “Let Me Ride” Dr. Dre was praised for bringing a melodic sound to hip hop, famously known as G-funk.
The album’s influence was so major it helped launch the careers of other West Coast artists like Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Warren G, and Nate Dogg:
