Xavier University is a private, historically black, Catholic institution. It was founded by Saint Katherine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament as a high school in 1915. Drexel and her sisters were dedicated to the academic development African and Native Americans. Xavier received university status in 1925. Through its two academic colleges, Xavier offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in several fields of study. Of the two, the College of Pharmacy is Xavier’s most popular department. Its purpose is to prepare future pharmacists to impact communities that are underserved medically, particularly African American, by diminishing health problems through patient-focused medical care, community service and scholarly work.
