If you have a thing for fast cars and lots of action, then you probably went to see the eighth installment of The Fast & The Furious franchise, The Fate of The Furious.

The film, directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, Friday), is making history at the box office. According to reports, “Furious 8” (as it is being nicknamed) has broken the all-time record for the highest opening of any film worldwide, with $532 million —-beating previous record holder “Star Wars The Force Awakens,” which opened with $529 worldwide. This huge win makes Gray the most successful black director to date.

This accomplishment is huge for any director, especially a Black director, who we rarely get to see direct movies with casts that are not predominately Black. In fact, here are a few movies that you probably didn’t expect to have Black directors:
