University of Alabama at Birmingham was established in 1936. Since its start, UAB has grown from 116 students to a student body of over 17,000. Through its 11 academic schools and colleges, UAB awards undergraduate and graduate degrees in various fields of study. Popular majors include Business, Communication, Journalism and Engineering. Intramural sports, music events and comedy shows are just a few of the activities available to UAB students. The Black Student Awareness Committee hosts many campus activities including fashion shows, lectures and art exhibits as well as the annual step show competition featuring traditionally African-American fraternities and sororities. Student-operated Blaze Productions gives UAB students access to concerts and shows. With more than 150 student groups and organizations, students are certain to find activities to engage their personal interests academically, spiritually, politically and socially.
