In what we hope is the last middle finger from 2016, the Washington Post reports that pop singer George Michael died at age 53.

While the cause of death is currently unknown, Michael’s publicist wrote “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”

Michael shot to fame in the early 80’s as part of the group Wham! who produced such hits as “Everything She Wants” and “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” Michael later saw a huge solo career with the release of his album “Faith” which contained huge songs like “I Want Your Sex,” “Father Figure” and the title track “Faith.”

Later in his career, the heart throb would come out of the closet as an openly gay man and turned that into art with his second solo album “Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1.”
