Niko was the son of Brian McKnight and his ex-wife, Julie McKnight. His passing was announced publicly on May 30 through a heartfelt Instagram post shared by Julie. In the tribute, she described her son as a “beloved husband, son, brother, grandson, uncle, and nephew,” whose “warmth, laughter, and love” left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. “Nikolas was a self-taught artist of music and photography,” she wrote. “His passing is an immeasurable loss.”
Julie requested privacy for their family during this time of grief, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support from friends, fans, and the public.
Niko’s uncle, Claude McKnight—Brian’s brother—also paid tribute in a TikTok video. He remembered Niko as “quirky, curious, and ridiculously talented,” highlighting his skills as a guitarist, singer, and photographer. “He was just one of those kids you always wanted to be around,” Claude said, fighting back tears. “It really sucks that he’s no longer with us.”

Throughout his cancer journey, Niko kept a relatively low profile. He shared his diagnosis over a year ago but largely stayed out of the spotlight. Despite his courage and strength, his condition eventually took a toll.
Notably absent from the tributes was Brian McKnight himself, who has not yet made a public statement about Niko’s death. The two had been estranged for several years, alongside Brian’s other children from his previous marriage: Brian Jr., Briana, and Clyde.

In past comments, Brian acknowledged the estrangement but offered little explanation. In a 2019 YouTube video, he said, “I’m not abandoning them. We are estranged.” The rift appeared to deepen over time. In April 2024, he sparked backlash after referring to his oldest children as a “product of sin” on social media. Niko responded online, questioning, “I’m evil??? That’s wild.” Brian did not reply.

This isn’t the first tragedy Brian has faced. In 2022, he and his current wife, Leilani, lost their infant son, Kekoa Matteo. They share another young son, Brian Kainoa Makoa Jr., and Leilani has two older children, Jack and Julia, from a previous relationship.
While the relationship between Brian and Niko remained distant until the end, Niko’s family and friends are now left to celebrate his life and remember the man he was—an artist, a gentle soul, and a beloved family member gone too soon.
