A feature film biopic about the late Bernie Mac is in the works under John Legend‘s Get Lifted production company.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the announcement was made as a surprise to Legend during a panel discussion at the 2021 Tribeca Festival.

“We just partnered with Bernie Mac’s estate to cover Bernie Mac’s story,” said Legend’s producing partner Mike Jackson. Adding that the news was “something that John doesn’t know about yet” and that he was “very excited about” the deal.

“Look at you breaking news over here,” responded Legend.

Legend and Jackson then reflected on the comedian’s legacy he left behind with the Grammy-winning artist saying The Bernie Mac Show was “beautifully done.”

“His humor was always edgy but it always had so much heart to it at the same time,” said the 42-year-old. “You could tell he was a family man. You could tell that he loved the people he was talking about.”

This announcement comes as a full-circle moment for Legend as he worked with Mac on one of his final films, Soul Men. “The Soul Men reunion you all wanted to see,” said Legend.

“He truly just got joy from lighting people’s faces up with laughter,” recalled Legend while working on the 2008 musical comedy.

No further details about the film have been released.
