1. “She’s Gotta Have It”

Perhaps the grandmother of quirky Black comedies, Spike Lee’s first movie is an unapologetic look at one woman’s decision to date three men simultaneously to figure out what she really wants from love.

2. “House Party”

Not exactly one you’d expect on this list, but when you think about it — the romance between “hood nerd” Kid and the middle-class Sydney is a sweet oasis in the middle of the film’s music, dancing and beat downs.

3. “love jones”

It’s hard to remember now, but when “jones” bust on the scene it broke all conventions as it dared to show artsy, bohemian black folks falling in and out of love

4. “Hav Plenty”

In the wake of “love jones” came this film about an out-of-work writer looking to make good on unrequited love.

5. “Medicine for Melancholy”

More of Netflix gem, this film follows two New Yorkers who attempt to spend a day together after a curious one-night stand.

6. “Collateral”

OK, so this isn’t really a romance film but the relationship that subtly blooms between cab driver Jamie Foxx and attorney Jada Pinkett-Smith (established in one incredible cab ride scene) makes this movie worthy of the list.
