Maya Angelou was born as Marguerite Ann Johnson, April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, MO.
Maya attended George Washington High School while studying dance and drama on a scholarship at the California Labor School and later would become a notable dancer.
Prior to graduation, she worked as the first Black female streetcar conductor in San Francisco.
Three weeks after completing highschool, she gave birth to her son. Maya understood the struggle of the single mother first hand, which she would discuss in many of her works, but would often say that her son was her greatest gift from God.
