Meagan Good made the decision to freeze her eggs in her late 30s after never really being “aspired to motherhood.” Three years later and she and husband DeVon Franklin are prepared to welcome a child together in the middle of next year.

In a candid interview, the 39-year-old shares the hardest part of her journey and speaks on the stigma women receive after expressing whether or not motherhood is for them.

“When you say you’re not sure you want to be a mom, people look at you like you’re a bad person,” said the director and actress to Romper. “As if something’s wrong with you. But I was never really that girl who said, “I can’t wait to get married,” “I can’t wait to be a mother.” I just was very much a tomboy, and I started my career so young that I’d always been very business-oriented.”

Although the egg freezing process “wasn’t a nightmare at all,” she was overcome by emotions when the doctors disclosed that she only had 10 eggs. Caused by a cyst inside her uterus, after “doubling up on birth control pills”, doctors found 17 eggs. Of those eggs, “…only 14 survived; after they checked the chromosomes, only seven survived.”

“After they put me and DeVon together to make a full egg that you could pop in the oven, only four survived,” she continued.

Then came the injections — “I was terrified,” stated the NAACP Image Award nominee. At first, Good opted for someone to inject her because she couldn’t imagine doing the action on herself. But once she tried it, the only problem that arose was the tenderness.

The hormones resulted in intense anxiety. Once she knew the feeling was normal, she did her best to get a hold of it, reminding herself, “Girl, you’re fine. Just because it’s a feeling doesn’t mean it’s real.”

During an episode of Established With Angela Yee, the Think Like A Man actress shared that aside from her career, part of the reason why she decided to postpone motherhood was because of her idol, Halle Berry.

“I’m like a big, big Halle Berry fan,” said Good. “I have watched her my entire life and entire career. When I saw that she had her first baby at like 40 I was like, ‘I think I’m going to be like that.'”

Good, who has been an actress since the 90s, said that she “never really aspired to marriage, I never really aspired to motherhood. I was always very much focused on my career because that’s all I knew my whole life and it’s what I love.”

Her excitement for motherhood didn’t come until after she married Franklin when she realized that she can still be who she is.

“I can still be the true identity of who I am and I can also be a mother and be a great one. So, I’ve just now gotten to that place and I’ll be 40 next year and I’m like, ‘Okay, it’s about that time!'”

The Los Angeles native chose to be transparent so that other people who may share the same feelings or experience know that they are not alone.

We can’t way to see their bundle of joy!
