Whoopi Goldberg and the singing nuns are coming back. Sister Act 3 is in the works.

Disney made the announcement via Twitter, saying, “Sister Act 3 is in development! @WhoopiGoldberg returns to star and produce with @TylerPerry as a producer as well. Sister Act 3 will premiere on @DisneyPlus.”

While Disney has not yet announced the full cast, Oscar-winning Goldberg will reprise her role as Deloris Van Cartier; a singer forced to enter the witness protection program as a nun in a convent.

The project comes almost 30 years after the first movie which premiered in 1992. The film was a hit, grossing over $231 million with a $31 million budget. The sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, was released the next year with a cast of fresh faces who would later go on to do big things in their careers — from Lauryn Hill to Monica Calhoun, Ryan Toby of R&B group City High, and more.

Now, almost 30 years after the first premiere, we can expect to see Goldberg back in action. In addition to staring in the film, the actress will produce the film along with Tyler Perry. The film will mark the fourth film they’ve worked on together.

The most recent project was Nobody’s Fool with Tiffany Haddish and Omari Hardwick in 2018. While promoting the film on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Perry teased the idea of another Sister Act movie starring Goldberg and Haddish.

“The two of them in Sister Act, that should happen. Let’s make it happen,” he said.

Goldberg also discussed the film during an appearance on The Late Show with James Corden in October. When Corden asked why fans hadn’t seen the third film yet, Goldberg explained, “Because for a long time they kept saying no one wanted to see it.”

“And then, quite recently, it turns out, that that may not be true,” she continued. “People might want to see it. So, we’re working diligently to try to figure out how to get the gang together and come back.”
