“The Color Purple” is getting a musical makeover! Oprah Winfrey confirmed that she, Quincy Jones, and Steven Speilberg have partnered up to bring the Broadway version of this classic film to the big screen.

The media mogul spoke with Deadline about Blitz Bazawule, the director of Beyoncé‘s newly released visual album “Black is King,” stating that he will be directing this new project as well. 

“We were all blown away by Blitz’s unique vision as a director and look forward to seeing how he brings the next evolution of this beloved story to life.”

Deadline also revealed that the award-winning poet and playwright, Marcus Gardley will writing the screenplay for the new musical.

This project is a continuation of the working relationship between Winfrey, Jones, and Speilburg. The trio worked together on the 2015 Broadway version of “The Color Purple,” as well as the original 1985 film, where Oprah made her debut film appearance.
