Sil Lai Abrams Says She Was Assaulted By A.J. Calloway, Raped By Russell Simmons

A new accusation against Russell Simmons has come to light since multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and rape surfaced last year. Author and domestic violence activist Sil Lai Abrams says the music mogul raped her in 1994. “I needed to tell my story, to say his name out loud, to let people know what he had done to me,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Abrams says she tried to kill herself the day after the alleged assault, swallowing a bottle of pills with wine. She even says she called Simmons and said, “I hope you know for the rest of your life that you made me kill myself!” According to Abrams, in 1998, Simmons apologized to her and said, “I’m sorry about what I did. I’m a different person now.” CBS News reports Simmons has denied the entire story including the apology. His lawyer Patricia Glaser told The Root, “Russell Simmons provided overwhelming material to THR [The Hollywood Reporter] (some on the record and some off the record) to support his unequivocal denial of any wrongdoing and THR chose to ignore it. It is extremely disappointing that a 24-year-old story, which did not get past very credible news outlets, was published in light of the massive contrary evidence.”

But he isn’t the only one.

Abrams also claims former 106 & Park and current EXTRA host A.J. Calloway also sexually assaulted her, an accusation he denies, “As I have maintained from the beginning, these allegations are not true. When I was first notified about these allegations by law enforcement more than a decade ago, I fully cooperated from the beginning and the case was dismissed…I intend to vigorously defend my reputation against these false accusations and will not let this cause further harm to my family.”

According to CBS News, “Calloway grabbed her hand and masturbated with it in 2006. Calloway was arrested and charged with forcible touching and attempted sexual misconduct, but the case was dismissed on procedural grounds, according to court orders Abrams showed THR.”

Although Abrams wrote about the accusations in her 2007 book, No More Drama (using aliases for Simmons and Calloway), after hearing women speak out about Harvey Weinstein during the #MeToo movement, she felt compelled to say their names out loud.
