In a rare interview, Kelis opens up about her life with rapper Nas, their ongoing custody battle (they share a son, eight-year-old Knight) and why she wants everyone to move on from their relationship (they married, according to the singer in 2002 before the public knew about it in 2005 and divorced in 2010).

The singer and now certified chef (she owns and operates a food truck and a successful line of gourmet sauces Bounty and Full) has since remarried to real-estate agent Mike Mora (they also have a son, Shepherd).

So why speak out now? To be fair, she was asked about her relationship with the Queens MC, but also revealed that she was no longer censoring herself about the topic.

“I have edited myself for nine years…and I woke up this morning and was like, not today.”

On the lowest point in their marriage:

“There was a lot of drinking. A lot of mental and physical abuse. I probably would’ve stayed longer if I wasn’t pregnant (she filed for divorce at seven months pregnant). We would fight. I never just sat there…but we would fight.”

On the internet’s perception of her being “crazy”:

“I’ve waited nine years to say anything. I have never talked about this man. The amount of airing out that I could do, our kids will find out. They are finding out. Did he hit me? Um-hm. Did I hit him? Um-hm. We drank too much. He would black out….there are a lot of things he probably doesn’t remember.”

Kelis also mentioned feeling pressured to speak out about the abuse during Chris Brown and Rihanna’s 2009 assault. Saying, “I had bruises all over my body at that time. I remember being in Atlanta. I wasn’t ready to walk so I didn’t say it.

Watch the entire interview below (skip to the 12:57 mark to hear about Nas).

Yikes.
