90 years later and Black writers are finally getting a little more recognition at the Academy Awards. Jordan Peele and Kobe Bryant made history last night, winning Oscars in two categories never won by Black people before!

Peele became the first Black screenwriter to win in the category of Best Original Screenplay for “Get Out” which truly was a win felt by all of Black America.

The NAACP Image Award-winning movie exposed the racial climate in America, and had everyone creating outlandish theories about its meaning. Although winning for Best Picture would’ve been ideal, we’re glad that one of the most revolutionary movies of 2017 got some of the recognition it deserves. Watch Peele’s acceptance speech below!

Kobe Bryant became the first Black person to win an Oscar for an Animated Film (Short) for his film “Dear Basketball,” also making him the first athlete to win an Oscar.

“I feel better than winning the championship,” Bryant told reporters following his Oscar win. Check out his acceptance speech below.

However, Bryant’s win was met with backlash. In light of the #MeToo movement, viewers were upset that the former NBA player was even nominated being that he was accused of sexual assault in 2003, according to Daily Beast. After the accuser was not willing to testify, the case was dropped in 2005 and a civil lawsuit was settled.

Roxane Gay, Black Panther comic series writer,  was one of many people who were not happy about this win.
