Reports are surfacing that Donald Trump made insensitive remarks to a widow who had just lost her husband in combat.

According to the New York Post, Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson said that in response to Myeshia Jonson’s husband, Army Sgt. La David Johnson ‘s death, Trump said, “he knew what he signed up for … but when it happens, it hurts anyway”.

Myeshia says she spoke to Trump for about five minutes and her only words were “Thank you”. Mrs. Johnson, along with the rest of their family, were the first to see her husband’s coffin at Miami International Airport on Tuesday.

Trump took to Twitter Wednesday morning to deny the remarks.

Congresswoman Wilson appeared on CNN Wednesday morning still standing by her claims.

The Post reports, “Johnson and three fellow soldiers were killed by ISIS-affiliated fighters in Niger on Oct. 4. His body had to be left behind amid the fighting and it took two days before it was recovered, according to US Africa Command.”
