When you think of all your favorite Black comedies on television, you probably just assumed that somewhere a brilliant Black female mind contributed to you laughing your ass off.
The truth is they most likely did, they just haven’t been recognized with an Emmy until now. The first to break this glass ceiling is Lena Waithe, who scored an Emmy nod after writing an episode entitled “Thanksgiving” of Aziz Ansari’s Master of None.
Apparently Waithe recently noticed that she made history with her Emmy nod announced in July when her publicist confirmed the fact with the Television Academy. She tells Variety:“I didn’t know I was the first black woman.”
Not only is Waithe representing for women of color, she represents for the LGBT community as well. The “Thanksgiving” episode shows Waithe who plays Denise coming out to her mother who is played by thee one and only Angela Bassett:
