Damon Wayans Jr. had viewers cracking up in his role as Coach on TV series, New Girl. Although, this 4th of July the television star didn’t quite get as many laughs in response to his 4th of July tweet that he posted on Tuesday.

Wayans was clearly making a joke about how white people love to glorify their precious country and their dearly loved ancestors, especially on a Holiday such as our Independence Day.

The tweet got over 1, 100 likes and more than 1, 200 responses with a variety of opinions. Many reactions didn’t think Wayans was right for joking during such an important and patriotic day.

User @ViperNTheTemple wrote back to Wayans, “Just another example of Hollywood talking down to Americans. They hate this country & their fans. #FabricatedRacism sadly returns @wayansjr,”. To which he responded “Jokes aren’t illegal”.

Other users turned the conversation to those in the armed forces and how the 4th of July was meant to represent the lives of those who have and continue to fight for our freedom.
