Luther Ronzoni Vandross, Jr. left this earth July 1, 2005 and R&B music was never the same. In honor of him, we celebrate his best moments…the songs that became the soundtrack of our love lives. His voice made us melt and his storytelling made us cling closer to the lovers in our lives.

Like most artists, he got his come-up as a background vocalist for heavy hitters like Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Donna Summer and even David Bowie. But that all changed, when he released his debut solo album Never Too Much in 1981. From there, the hits kept coming until his death in 2005.

He sold more than 25 million records. He received eight Grammy Awards. He was the greatest and what we wouldn’t do to hear him sing, “…I’m not meant to live alone, turn this house into a home, when I climb the stairs and turn the key, oh, please be there, sayin’ that you’re still in love with me…”  just one more time on that great big stage of lights.

Before we get too emotional, let’s walk down memory lane and count down his top 5 songs of all time:
