Drake In Concert

(Originally published on 07.30.2012)

Drake has quite the knack for saying things that drive people to boo, hiss, and mock the hell out of him. His latest declaration that he is the first artist to rap and sing is no different, though it is more ridiculous than the usual nonsense that sometimes comes out of his mouth.

Drake tells The Jewish Chronicle:

“There were people who incorporated melody before me, but I would deem myself the first person to successfully rap and sing.”

“Yes, there are aspects of it that are new in the rap world. But it’s not a gimmick. I just sort of exist and people embrace it. I’m one of the few artists who gets to be himself every day. It doesn’t take me six hours to get ready and I don’t have to wake up in the morning and remember to act like this or talk like this. I just have to be me. That’s one of the favourite parts of my life – I’ve done this purely by being myself.”

So Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott are figments of my imagination? Lauryn is a better rapper and singer than Aubrey Graham is and has the Album of the Year Grammy win to prove it. Meanwhile, there’s also Ja Rule, who paved the way for all of the sing-songey stuff Drake’s doing now. Not to be outdone, there’s MC Skat Kat, who was murking folks on wax when Drake was still drinking from a sippy cup.

Respect your elders, Canadian.
