Lane College is a historically black, private, liberal arts college. It was established in 1882 as the C.M.E. High School with the sole purpose of making sure that freed slaves could read, write and speak correctly. Lane College played an important role in minimizing the rate of illiteracy of African Americans in the South. Through its three schools, Lane offers Bachelor’s degrees in several fields of study. Majors include Mass Communication, Music, Criminal Justice, Biology, Chemistry and more. College life is not just restricted to the classroom; students engage in activities hosted by the many student groups and organizations on campus. Since its beginning, Lane College has educated thousands of students who now proficiently compete in their career fields. Lane College’s mission is to develop the whole person through academic excellence, and ethical, social and spiritual development.
