Established in 1817, University of Michigan is a public research institution that provides “an uncommon education for the common man.” UM offers numerous degree programs through its 20 schools and colleges. Some of the university’s most popular majors include Economics, Business Administration, Political Science and English. In 1970 UM established the department of Afro American and African Studies. Through DAAS, students can explore the representation, experiences, society and culture of Africans and those of African descent. Outside the classroom, students can become involved in the numerous student groups and organizations on campus. African-American student groups include Black Business Students Association, Black Pre-Medical Association and all nine National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities and sororities. UM is dedicated to developing its students into leaders and citizens that will challenge the present and enrich the future. UM’s mission is to serve the people in both Michigan and the world by creating, communicating, preserving and applying knowledge and academic values.
