Bethune-Cookman University was founded by educator and civil-rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune in 1904 as the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls. In 1941 the school was approved by the Florida State Department of Education to award bachelor degrees in liberal arts and education. Through its seven academic schools, B-CU offers 37 degree programs in a variety of interests such as English, Music Technology, Biology, Criminal Justice and much more. Outside of the classroom, students can become involved in many social, academic and community activities. On campus, B-CU has all of the National Pan-Hellenic Council sororities and fraternities. Since its beginnings, B-CU has grown from the educational home of five African-American girls to a co-ed institution with over 3,600 students that carries on Bethune’s legacy of faith, scholarship and service.
