There’s a lesson to be learned today.

The professor? Jay Z.

The subject? History. Specifically, the history of the war on drugs, and how it, well, wasn’t really that effective.

The textbook? Nah, chill. Young people don’t read (unless it’s on social media).

We have to give it to Jay. For an older (is he 50 yet?) and established guy, Jay Z really knows how to get the attention of people, especially the youth. He knew we wouldn’t care to read an open letter about topics as heavy as systemic racism, drugs, and the disproportionate incarceration of people of color. He brilliantly decided to educate us by entertaining us with an animated history lesson:

This short film Gold Rush was produced by feminist filmmaker, dream hampton, and illustrated by crosshatch-style artist, Molly Crabapple.

TELL US: What other topics of discussion should Jay Z animate for us?
